Stomach Cancer Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ

WHAT IS STOMACH CANCER SURGERY?

While a sleeve gastrectomy has become popular for surgical weight loss, a full or partial gastrectomy is performed to treat medical problems. Removing part or all of the stomach with laparoscopic gastrectomy can be used to treat stomach cancer, benign tumors, bleeding, inflammation, and sever ulcers. At Arizona Premier Surgery, the skilled surgeons help patients treat stomach conditions with laparoscopic gastrectomy for full or partial removal of the stomach. Laparoscopically assisted gastrectomy (LAG) typically causes less pain for the patient and has a faster recovery time than open stomach surgery. A laparoscopic gastrectomy also has a lower rate of complications than open surgery, which makes it a great option for many patients.

COMMON REASON FOR STOMACH CANCER SURGERY

Stomach Cancer

The main reason part or all the stomach is removed is when the patient has stomach cancer or cancer that has spread from another part of the body to the stomach. The spread of the cancer will determine how much of the stomach will be removed during the gastrectomy. In some cases, surrounding lymph nodes, the spleen, and parts of the esophagus, intestines, and pancreas may also need to be removed. A laparoscopic gastrectomy can be performed on most stages of stomach cancer. Patients who have the CDH1 gene have a greater chance of developing stomach cancer, so a total gastrectomy can be performed to prevent cancer.

HOW LAP GASTRECTOMY WORKS

Patients are put under general anesthesia during their stomach removal surgery, which is sometimes known as “keyhole surgery.” The surgeon will first make small incisions in the abdomen where the laparoscopes will be inserted. In a partial gastrectomy, the lower half of the stomach and any affected lymph nodes will be removed. The remaining part of the stomach will be re-connected to the small intestine to allow normal digestion. A complete gastrectomy will remove the whole stomach before the surgeon connects the esophagus to the small intestine. After a gastrectomy, patients will have dietary restrictions and will also need to take several supplements to maintain their health.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH STOMACH CANCER SURGERY

A laparoscopic gastrectomy takes about 2 hour to complete before the patient is moved to recovery. Patients will spend several nights in the hospital to receive proper post-operative care and close observation. Once the patient is released to go home, it typically takes 4 – 6 weeks before the patient is recovered enough to resume normal activities. Patients should schedule a follow up appointment in 6 – 8 weeks so the doctor can check the recovery process and discuss dietary changes.
