Umbilical Hernia Symptoms
The word “hernia” comes from the Latin word for “rupture” because hernias are small ruptures or holes in your abdominal muscles. Something as minor as a cough, lifting a weight or just standing up can cause part of your intestines or subcutaneous fat to be forced through the hole.
Umbilical hernias get their name from the umbilical cord that connected you to your mother in the womb. After birth, the umbilical cord is disconnected and, most often, the hole in your abdominal wall that allowed the cord to pass through, closes up by itself
In some cases, the wall does not close completely. Over time, it opens further which allows fat or a small portion of intestine to be pushed through the hole. That is what causes the bulge and the associated pain.
Umbilical hernia symptoms include:
- A soft bulge or swelling near the belly button
- Pain or discomfort, especially when coughing, lifting, or bending
- Tenderness or aching in the abdomen
- Discoloration or swelling of the skin around the hernia
Our Precision Approaches
Arizona Premier Surgery offers two umbilical hernia repair options:
Robotic-Assisted Hernia Repair and Traditional Open Hernia Repair.
Robotic Umbilical Hernia Repair
Robotic-assisted hernia repair is a minimally invasive procedure using state-of-the-art robotic technology. This method involves small incisions through which robotic instruments are guided to repair the hernia. This technique provides enhanced precision and faster recovery times, making it an excellent option for patients looking for minimally invasive treatment.
Robotic Umbilical Hernia Repair Benefits
- Smaller incisions with minimal scarring
- Faster recovery and quicker return to daily activities
- Reduced postoperative pain and risk of infection
- Enhanced precision due to 3D high-definition visualization
Open Umbilical Hernia Repair
In some cases, an open surgical approach may be necessary, especially for larger or more complex umbilical hernias. During open hernia repair, the surgeon makes a larger incision at the site of the hernia to access the protruding tissue. The tissue is repositioned, and the abdominal wall is reinforced with sutures or a mesh implant to prevent recurrence.
Open Umbilical Hernia Repair Benefits
- A traditional, reliable approach
- Ideal for larger or recurrent hernias
- Can be performed under local or general anesthesia
The process starts with a private consultation with your Arizona Premier Surgery physician.
