The word “hernia” comes from the Latin word for “rupture” because hernias are small ruptures that create holes in your abdominal muscles. Something as minor as a cough, lifting a weight or just standing up can cause part of your intestines to be forced through the hole.
Inguinal hernias differ from other types of hernias in that they occur in the lower abdominal and groin region and are far more common in men than women. In men, inguinal hernias sometimes appear in the scrotal region. In women and rare cases, an ovary may be pressed through the abdominal rupture.

Robotic Hernia Repair
Robotic-assisted hernia repair is an advanced, minimally invasive technique where the surgeon controls robotic instruments through small incisions. This method allows for greater precision, reduced postoperative pain, and faster recovery times.
Robotic or laparoscopic hernia repair surgery repair may be performed with general anesthesia. Depending on the size and location of the hernia, most procedures will take about one hour.
Once the patient is ready, the surgeon will make 3-4 small incisions and insert the camera so the surgeon can see and repair the hernia. The hernia may be repaired with surgical mesh or sutures to strengthen the muscle or tissue to prevent the hernia from reoccurrence.

Open Hernia Repair

Patients may feel sore for 1-3 days after surgery but are encouraged to walk as soon as possible after surgery to improve blood flow for faster healing.
With robotic surgery, most patients can return to normal activities within 2-3 weeks. Recovery from open surgery may take a bit longer, typically around 4-6 weeks. Patients should schedule a follow-up appointment with us about two weeks after their surgery and avoid exercise and strenuous activity until cleared by their doctor.
