Throughout our lives, we all smile, laugh, frown, squint, and make other facial expressions to help us communicate. Young, healthy skin and muscles contract to make an expression and then relax back to smooth. However, the facial can become tense from contracting, which causes lines to form on the skin over the muscle. Known as dynamic wrinkles, these are lines and creases throughout the face that can still be seen after the face relaxes. These dynamic wrinkles typically appear between the eyebrows, in the "crow's feet" at the corners of the eyes, horizontal creases on the forehead, and other areas of the face. BOTOX Cosmetic is a popular injectable wrinkle treatment that is used to temporarily relax dynamic wrinkles throughout the face for a more refreshed, youthful appearance. At Arizona Premier Surgery, we offer BOTOX Cosmetic injections to help patients in and around Chandler, Gilbert, and Scottsdale relax their dynamic wrinkles for 3 – 6 months.
"Everyone is so nice at this office. The doctors where so gentle and very informative. My treatment looks so amazingly natural. It was important for me to not look like I have had anything done. You can see my lips are just a little bigger and my smile lines are gone!!! (photo with marron shirt is post treatment)"- J.F. / Google / Nov 13, 2018
Common Reasons for Treatment
Dynamic Lines and Wrinkles
Deep lines caused by facial expressions that can make a person look angry, sad, tired, or upset. BOTOX injections relax the contracted facial muscle, which allows the overlying skin to be smoother. BOTOX can be used at the earliest signs of aging to stave off the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.
BOTOX can also be used to improve facial symmetry by relaxing muscles, tight neck bands, and muscle spasms. Facial asymmetry may be a congenital condition or it may be caused by an accident or injury to the face.
Beyond cosmetic uses, BOTOX can also be used to treat certain medical conditions including migraine headaches and hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration). BOTOX can also help patients with blepharospasms (eyelid spasms), cervical dystonia, some movement disorders, as well as crossed or lazy eyes.
Before their treatment, patients will discuss their concerns and goals with the doctor along with their medical history so an appropriate BOTOX treatment plan can be created. In some cases, BOTOX may be combined with Juvéderm wrinkle filler treatments for what is known as a "liquid facelift." The injections sites will be marked and cleansed before the doctor carefully injects an appropriate amount of BOTOX into the needed areas of the face. Most patients have little to no discomfort after the initial needle prick, but numbing creams can be applied to help patients feel more relaxed during their treatment.
What to Expect
BOTOX injections typically take about 30 minutes, but this will vary based on what is being treated and the number of injection sites. Performed as an outpatient procedure, patients can leave to resume their normal activities after their treatment, but they should be careful to avoid touching their face and performing strenuous activities. Patients may have some swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites that typically subside 1 – 3 days after treatment. Patients should schedule a follow up appointment 2 weeks after their initial injection so the doctor can check their results and address any reactions or side effects. To maintain results, patients should schedule BOTOX treatments every 3 – 6 months.
